At the meeting point of the east-west Mittellandkanal and Elbe-Havel Kanal with the roughly south-north-Elbe river, the ships were transported from one waterway to the other by a lift, built in 1938, which looks like a big bath-tub
After German reunification, a big lock was built.... the ships' elevator now is not important any more and was only used once in a year. The lift, one of 4 remaining in Germany at the moment, is threatened to be closedhttp://www.wasserstrassenkreuz.de/hebewerk.html
